Title: Educating Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in the Schools:

Planning, Adaptations, Classroom Support and Problem-Solving

Navigation & Usability:

Provided a variety of links with information and teaching techniques, mainly for autism. But this could be because asperger’s disorder is a part of autism. One link was not accessible.

Authorship:

There are message boards for communicating with other teachers, professionals, people with autism, parents, etc… However, it does not provide information about a direct author of the page. We searched a link for information written and/or edited by the author of the site, but we could not identify the author.

Content & Validity:

This site was very organized and informational. It was also readable. The format was colorful and the font was of decent size, appealing to the eyes. It provided a variety of useful links that were easily accessible, only one didn’t work. The author was not available to contact. The site provided exactly what we were searching for, teaching techniques.

Title: Amby's Education Site:
Specific Learning Disabilities

Navigation & Usability:

Provided a variety of links with information and teaching techniques for various learning disabilities. Links were easily accessible, but from there, specific information was not always easy to find.

Authorship:

The author, Amby Duncan-Carr, designed this web page in 1997. There is no email program set up to converse with the author and there are no message boards available for communicating with her, other teachers, professionals, parents, etc… It also provides information on the purpose of the site.

Content & Validity:

This site was organized in categories, making information easy to find. A navigation bar at the top made maneuvering over Amby’s information easy. The areas were informational. It was also readable. The format was colorful and the font was of decent size, appealing to the eyes. It provided a variety of useful links that were easily accessible. An index provides many internet tools and website development resources from the author to prepare the user for searching techniques. It also includes an abundance of resources education, test preparation, portfolios, Mensa, brain games, etc…

Summary of research:

The last search engine we encountered provided a lot of international and bilingual resources. Many of the sites mentioned throughout the different search engines were the same. The search engine results were all of high quality, mostly containing organizational and professional sites with a few personal-experience sites.

However, our first search, using Google.com, narrowed our search topic significantly more than the other search engines. Google.com provided us with the specific information we were looking for (teaching techniques). This search engine was a new avenue for us to travel down. Neither of us had ever used it. The quotation mark technique used to narrow a search was also a new experience for us both. It made all the difference in locating our specific information with Google.com; whereas, with the other search engines it did not make a difference. This assignment provided us with skills for effective, productive, and useful searching.
